Volunteering

A volunteer is someone who gives their time, without pay, to help other people or to help a charitable cause.

You can volunteer if:

  • you are in independent accommodation or supported housing
  • you’re in employment, at college, receiving benefits, or retired
  • you are a UK national, resident, refugee or asylum seeker.

If you become a volunteer, you decide what to do, where to go and how much time to give.

Why do people volunteer?

There are many reasons why people volunteer. Reasons people have given when asked include to:

  • use their skills and expertise to help others.
  • learn new skills
  • build confidence and self esteem
  • get work experience and strengthen their CV
  • meet new people and make new friends
  • get out of the house and reduce isolation
  • help someone or contribute to a cause
  • be part of the community
  • have fun.
